Carnival
Every year from Holy Thursday to Ash Wednesday, a man known as King Carnestoltes takes over in Barcelona. The big-bellied ruler hosts masquerade balls, lavish feasts, and parades with creative costumes. The festivities begin once the King arrives and reach their high point with the “Gran Rúa”, or the Great Parade. This spectacle consists of hundreds of costumed people, and thousands more come to watch in the streets. Other districts have their own smaller parades around this time, too. Special mention:Sunday Febraury 26th: "La Taronjada" - Orange ballon and confetti battle at the end of the Parade in the dirstrict of Born. When:
Llum Barcelona + Fiesta Santa Eulalia
Back in Frankfurt, Germany, where I used to live, there was an event known as the “Luminale”, and Barcelona has something like it, too! Elaborate lighting installations decorate the city in various places. This celebration coincides with the Celebration of Santa Eulalia (Fiesta Santa Eulalia), patron saint of Barcelona and primary saint in the Gotico Cathedral.
